Discover the world of Turkish desserts in Sydney. From flaky pistachio baklava to warm, syrup-soaked kunefe, here's what's on our dessert menu in Darlinghurst.
Turkish desserts occupy a special place in the culinary world, they're lavish, deeply flavoured and built on centuries of craft. At Cappadocia Cafe in Darlinghurst, we serve the classics: baklava, kunefe and more, made the way they're meant to be made.
Baklava, $12
Baklava is Turkey's most famous export to the sweet world. Thin sheets of filo pastry are layered with crushed pistachio, baked until golden and then soaked in a light sugar syrup. The result is crispy, nutty, sweet and utterly addictive. Ours is made in the traditional style, not overly sweet, with a generous pistachio filling that lets the nut do the work.
Kunefe, $18
Kunefe is less well known outside Turkey, but it's arguably the more dramatic dessert. Shredded kadayif (wheat pastry) is pressed around a layer of soft white cheese, baked until golden and then drenched in sweet syrup. It arrives warm, with crushed pistachio on top and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. The contrast of warm pastry, melted cheese, sweet syrup and cold ice cream is extraordinary.
Tiramisu, $14
Our Tiramisu is a nod to the broader Mediterranean café tradition. Classic layers of espresso-soaked savoiardi and mascarpone cream, dusted with cocoa. A firm favourite with guests who want something familiar and perfectly executed.
What to Drink with Turkish Desserts
Turkish coffee is the natural companion to baklava, the slight bitterness of the coffee cuts through the sweetness of the pastry perfectly. Turkish Tea (çay) works equally well, especially after a large meal. Our pistachio latte ($5.50) is also a popular pairing with kunefe.
